20,000 new drivers in the UK lost their licence between May 2006 and April 2007 as a result of accumulating six or more points in their first two years of driving. This large number suggests that many new drivers are unaware of how easy it is to lose their licence and the various ways it can be lost.
Kent Highways Services is working to raise awareness amongst new drivers about the risk of losing their licence in the first two years of driving. Speeding is probably the most common way to receive points on your licence and just six points in the first two years of driving will mean the licence being revoked.
Steve Horton from Kent Highway Services says: "It is vital that we get the message across to new drivers that for the first two years after they pass their test, they are on probation. If they rack up six points within that period they will lose their licence, have to reapply for a provisional licence and retake both their theory and practical test. Six points isn't a lot, it is two speeding offences - so they need to drive responsibly."

Kent Highway Services hopes their 'cut your speed, not your licence' campaign will educate new drivers on the various ways that points can be 'scored' so that they retain their licence in the first two years and become more responsible drivers.
