The Campaign

Kent Police and Kent Highway Services have teamed up to target young pub goers and clubbers with the anti drug drive message, some of whom are likely to be drug users. Kent Highway Services hope to discourage people from driving if they are under the influence of drugs.

A national survey carried out by the government showed that 18% of driver/rider fatalities had some form of illegal drug in their system.

Steve Horton from Kent Highway Services says: "The problem of drug-driving is growing fast. The simple fact is that many drugs will affect a driver's ability to drive safely. If you are under the influence of drugs then don't drive. Find alternative transport like a taxi or public transport because a trip behind the wheel could well be your last."

Kent Police are trained at carrying out roadside field impairment tests to help them decide whether to arrest someone if they suspect they have been driving on drugs. The penalties are the same as for drink driving - A minimum one year driving ban, a fine of up to £5,000, up to six months jail and the loss of your licence for at least 12 months.
