Helmet Wearing

Wearing a bicycle helmet – It’s not cool!!!!!

Whilst wearing a helmet is not a legal requirement, helmets can reduce injury.

Wearing a helmet is recommended for all cyclists but it is especially important for children as they are more vulnerable and more likely to come off their bike.

Young people are natural risk takers and have not developed the full ability to judge dangers and potential risks. It is important that the young cyclist gets into the habit of wearing a helmet as a lot of injuries are sustained off-road and close to home.

No helmet can eliminate the risk of injury entirely but can dramatically reduce head / brain injuries. They can also protect the head from cuts and scrapes. We are very careful with transporting our computers but fail to look after the brain, the most complex computer available to us.

Kent Highways Road Safety encourages cycling and wish to develop a positive attitude whist helping instil a safety message. They have produced posters to support the wearing of cycle helmets as part of the cycling gear.

A helmet is a necessity not an accessory.

Splash of colour for safer cycling

Hundreds of children across Kent have produced a splash of colour for a tee-shirt design competition to promote cycling safety.

KCC Cabinet Member Nick Chard, left, pictured with the children and their winning shirt designs in front of the cyclists who will be taking part in Sevenoaks Rotary Club's challenge ride.

They used vivid yellow, bright blue and red shirts emblazoned with the ‘Be safe be seen’ message for the safer cycling campaign.

Shirts with the winning designs will be worn by a team of officers from Kent County Council road safety and Kent Police taking part in the Circuit of Kent charity challenge ride in September, organised by Sevenoaks Rotary Club.

KCC Cabinet Member for Highways Nick Chard, presenting the winning pupils with their shirts, said:

“This is a great idea. We are very concerned about children’s safety and I very much welcome that schools have taken this on board. The shirt designs are excellent. Most of the adults I have spoken to have said that we couldn’t have got a professional to do a better job.”
